Welcome to El Mirage

Community Summary

An incorporated City in Maricopa County, in the Phoenix West Valley, roughly 16–20 miles northwest of downtown Phoenix. It began in the 1930s as a small agricultural settlement on the west bank of the Agua Fria River, populated largely by migrant farm workers who came to build irrigation canals and harvest crops; most sources place its founding around 1937, as a roughly 134-acre settlement.

"El Mirage" is Spanish/English for "the mirage," but no primary source documents a specific origin story for why the town was given that name — this should not be presented as a settled legend in published copy.

El Mirage incorporated as a Town on June 25, 1951, and became a City by special election in 1983. It remains an incorporated City today, with a council-manager form of government.

Population figures vary slightly by source and vintage:

  • 2010 Census: 31,797
  • 2020 Census: 35,805
  • 2023/2025 estimates: approximately 35,820–36,101

Land area is approximately 9.90–9.95 square miles — one of the physically smallest incorporated municipalities in the West Valley (for comparison, neighboring Surprise and Peoria are each well over 100 square miles).

El Mirage is essentially surrounded by Surprise (largely to the north and west) and Peoria (to the south and east), with Glendale, Youngtown, and unincorporated Waddell/Luke Air Force Base areas also nearby. Because of its very small footprint, addresses and amenities near its edges are easily and commonly mistaken for a neighboring city, or vice versa.

Correction on a commonly repeated claim: A WWII-era "El Mirage Field" glider-training airfield is often referenced online, but that airfield is located in San Bernardino County, California — unrelated to El Mirage, Arizona. The genuine Arizona connection is the city's longstanding proximity to Luke Air Force Base (established 1941 several miles to the west), which has shaped El Mirage's development, including flight-path considerations, rather than any glider-training site within the city itself.

Sub-Communities & Neighborhoods

Real estate data platforms (not official city planning documents) commonly identify two named residential subdivisions within El Mirage: Rancho El Mirage and Arizona Brisas. These should be treated as commonly used real estate names rather than confirmed official planning districts, since no city planning or zoning document independently corroborating them was found.

No large master-planned community comparable to Verrado, Sun City, or Sun City Grand exists within El Mirage — those communities belong to Buckeye, Peoria, and Surprise, respectively, and should never be attributed to El Mirage.
