Welcome to Surprise

Community Summary

An incorporated City in the northwest Phoenix metro area (West Valley), Maricopa County. The community was founded in 1938; land records verified in 2010 show the townsite land was owned by Flora Mae Statler before she married Homer C. Ludden, who earlier popular histories had credited alone as founder.

The popular story behind the city's name is that Flora Statler said she'd "be surprised if the town ever amounted to much." This account is explicitly noted as contested — an alternative, equally documented theory holds that Homer Ludden hailed from Surprise, Nebraska, and pioneers commonly named new settlements after their hometowns. This should be treated as popular/disputed folklore rather than settled history.

Surprise incorporated as a Town on December 12, 1960, and is today an incorporated City.

Population figures by date (Surprise has grown rapidly, so figures vary significantly):

  • 2010 Census: 117,517
  • 2020 Census: 143,148
  • July 2024 Census Bureau estimate: 167,564
  • July 2025 Census Bureau estimate: 175,304

Land area is approximately 110.52 square miles (110.30 sq mi land, 0.22 sq mi water).

Surprise borders Sun City West on the south, west, and north (Sun City West is enclosed on three sides by Surprise, but is a separate community — see Sub-Communities section below). Peoria, El Mirage, Waddell, and Youngtown are also nearby West Valley communities.

Sub-Communities & Neighborhoods

Important correction — Sun City West is a separate, unincorporated Maricopa County census-designated place (CDP), not part of the City of Surprise. It has no municipal government of its own; it is represented by the Property Owners and Residents Association (PORA), a private nonprofit. It is merely bordered by Surprise on three sides.

Sun City Grand ("The Grand") IS within Surprise city limits. It is a distinct, separate community from Sun City West and the original Sun City (both unincorporated and outside Surprise), founded in 1996 with final homes completed in 2005. See Frequently Asked Questions for its verified age-restriction status.
